Hilary Duffy: Photographer Extraordinaire & Dedicated Donor

"Supporting women's reproductive health in rural and

Indigenous communities is critically important."

We recently had the good fortune to talk with Hilary Duffy, an accomplished photographer who, together with her family, has been a wonderful supporter of GPA's work over the past decade. Read about what motivates this avid social observer in her philanthropy.

Hilary, tell us a little bit about your background.

I’m a social documentary and humanitarian photographer. I work with immigrant populations in NYC where I am based. I’ve had the opportunity to live and work long-term in Costa Rica and Cuba, and I’ve traveled widely throughout Latin America.

What motivates you to give to GPA?

Supporting women's reproductive health in rural and Indigenous communities is critically important. These populations often lack access to care, attention, transportation and the means to attain good healthcare during their pregnancies. The role of community health promoters and midwives is vital for healthier, educated communities, and infant mortality is reduced. I like the way GPA takes the lead on a grassroots level in its commitment to this.

What inspires you about GPA’s work?

I volunteered as a photographer for GPA and I had the opportunity to meet some of the midwives in Chiapas. I talked to them and they shared what motivates them about their work. I was impressed by their deep level of commitment to traditional midwifery and supporting the women in their communities.

I also witnessed the trainings GPA was conducting, the empowerment sessions with women, and the energy amongst the facilitators and leaders. I saw how genuinely fulfilled, driven and committed the midwives are, even while they navigate truly challenging circumstances. I was moved, and I felt even more compelled to support and invest in GPA's mission and vision of reducing maternal and infant mortality to improve the lives of women and children in Mexico and Guatemala.

We’re grateful Hilary. Your support makes our work possible!
