GPA Expands to the Yucatán!
This fall, GPA launched its Midwife Enrichment Course in Mérida, Yucatán with two groups of Maya midwives. The Covid-19 pandemic has impacted Yucatán state quite severely, and maternal mortality rates are on the rise. The course, developed from an intercultural, gender-based perspective of care, recognizes and values these essential health workers as specialists in their communities for caring for women, while also enriching their knowledge and practice with elements of Western Medicine. It is this spirit of respectful exchange that will help guarantee Maya women and children have access to quality, culturally-appropriate healthcare.
GPA is working in Jurisdiction 1 in Yucatan state, with the collaboration of the Secretaría de Salud and the Administración del Patrimonio de la Beneficiencia Pública de Yucatán
