How you can support GPA’s 2012 activities

Your gift will provide life-saving services to women and children in Latin America. And, when you make a gift donation in someone’s honor, GPA will send a greeting card with a photo and a description of the project you are supporting. Please select from the following GPA projects, or designate your own amount to go where it is needed most.

GPA is a project of Social and Environmental Entrepreneurs (SEE), a registered 501(c)3 charity. All contributions are fully tax-deductible.

1. Materials to train health workers ($25)

Training midwives and other health care workers requires a variety of materials, from simple drawings to life-like models depicting the stages of pregnancy and labor. As we expand our training program to include physicians and other health workers, our need for materials increases. Your gift of $25 will help us develop a fund specifically to design or purchase needed educational materials.

2. Strengthening health promoters ($50)

In rural communities, health promoters play a key role in educating community members about nutrition, hygiene, infant care, first aid, and family planning. Through our Small Grants program, $50 builds the capacity of a health promoter to serve this function, which is particularly vital in indigenous communities that are isolated from all other health resources.

3. Access to safe water ($100)

Diseases from lack of clean water cause over 7,000 deaths per day in children under 5. In many communities, women and children must walk great distances to obtain water for drinking and cooking. GPA is committed to helping rural communities gain permanent access to clean water through innovative, community-based projects. Based on the size and scale of past projects, every $100 can support water access for up to 10 families.

4. Training for one midwife ($150)

In the Yajalón region of Chiapas, Mexico, 85% of babies are born at home – most delivered by lay midwives who have never been formally trained to handle obstetric complications. $150 will support a midwife to attend an 8-session training program and participate in a network of other practitioners. Your gift covers the cost of instruction, transportation, equipment and supplies, and could affect the futures of dozens of mothers and babies.

5. Community-designed projects ($250)

Our Small Grants program helps grassroots communities identify and solve their most urgent health problems through well-conceived projects. Examples include planting nutritious gardens to curb malnutrition and upgrading a community clinic with equipment and training. Each $250 donated helps us provide financial and technical support to more marginalized communities.

6. Sponsor a group of midwives ($500)

This gift will help train up to 20 traditional birth attendants in Mexico or Guatemala in life-saving midwifery skills within the context of their sacred cultural backgrounds. It will cover the group’s instruction, materials, and transportation for one of 8 training sessions. Older midwives are paired with younger ones to share valuable experiences, as they all learn modern, evidence-based approaches to maternal and infant care.
