In Guatemala
In 2010, thanks to generous support from key donors, GPA partnered with a local engineering organization, Pro-Agua, to implement two projects designed to supply water to more than 4,000 displaced persons – more than half of them children – in the communities of Vista Hermosa and Jalapa.
In Vista Hermosa, the GPA grant was used to carry out an engineering study and complete the installation of electrical cables and posts to water pumps. Upon completion, the project will provide the electricity needed to pump the well water to public faucets for use by the community’s members. Once the local municipality completes the connection to the local water system, the community and health centers will have access to water.
In the village of Jalapa, Pro-Agua conducted a design study to construct a gravity flow water system to over 330 families. The design for the water system needed to be redone because parts of the study were not conducted correctly, particularly the topography study. Once completed, this project will ensure a constant flow of clean water to the village and help leaders establish a fiscal management plan to maintain the system.
